The Cost of Being Unemployed
By Barbara Adams, CPRW, CEIP, CMRC, CFRW www.militaryresumewriters.com and www.careerproplus.com
There have been 200,000 jobs created in December of 2011 which is a good sign. Many economists predict that 2012 will still be a struggle
for job seekers however more jobs will become available. Don't depend on your terminal leave, vacation pay, unemployment or other resources
to fall back on or use these benefits as an excuse to prolong looking for employment. The sooner you start looking, the sooner you will find
a job and the less money it will cost you to be out of work.
If you are unemployed, it is critical for you to understand how much salary you are actually losing by being unemployed.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics), the unemployment rate is currently above 10%. This represents over
15M people; the highest national rate since April, 1983. Of those who are unemployed, over 35% have been jobless for 27 weeks or more.
The BLS states the average duration for a job search is 28.1+ weeks.
This means if you were earning $70,000 and it took you 28 weeks (140 business days) to find a new job -- you lost $37,660 by being unemployed!
Professional assistance can help to reduce the averages above. Trimming just a week or two off your job search can save you a significant
amount of money, whether in savings, or in lost income.
Please refer to the chart to see how you are affected.

Registration is now open for an intensive training course that will prepare graduates for employment in this emerging field. Relyant, LLC, in
partnership with the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, will provide instruction for this 7-week, 280 hour course. Designed to meet all training
standards outlined in the Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board Technical Paper 18, graduates will be fully qualified Unexploded Ordnance (UXO)
Technician I/IMAS EOD Level 2 certified immediately.
The information and skills taught during the course prepare the student to safely assist in the location, identification, removal, and disposal of
hazardous unexploded ordnance, explosives, and hazardous waste materials. Eligible student veterans can fund up to 100% of tuition for this course with
their Post 9-11 GI Bill and receive a book stipend and housing allowance during their stay in Knoxville. In addition, student loans available through Sallie
Mae offer low-interest, low-monthly-payment options for covering not only tuition, but also pre-course costs such as the hazardous waste operations and
emergency response (HAZWOPER) physical.
Millions of acres in the United States and around the world contain land mines and UXO. The risks UXO pose to property and personnel could be
significant. In the past month alone, UXO discoveries in England, Vietnam, and Malta showed the needs extend beyond current war-impacted countries.
All these were at least 40-years old.
In addition, technicians may find employment at Former Utilized Defense Sites (FUDS),Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Sites and accidents within
the government and civilian sectors.

AmeriCorps Recruiting Our Nation's Heroes
As America's heroes return from war zones and transition back into civilian life, many are facing challenges finding work. Last month, more
than over 857,000 veterans were unemployed, and the jobless rate for post-9/11 veterans is 13.1 percent.
Recognizing the unique skills and leadership abilities of America's veterans, the Corporation for National and Community Service is joining
forces to recruit more veterans to serve in AmeriCorps. Using the skills they honed overseas, veterans are continuing to serve on the home front
through AmeriCorps - responding to disasters, building homes, mentoring at-risk youth, and supporting other veterans and their families.
More than 16,000 veterans have served in AmeriCorps since its inception AmeriCorps helps put veterans on a pathway to economic opportunity as
they assist others in the military community—and, in doing so, find strength in making an impact on problems here at home.
Interested in joining AmeriCorps? Here's a look at just a few programs that are recruiting veterans now:
- Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), the National Guard Bureau and the CNCS recently announced a unique new AmeriCorps program called
VetCorps to help returning veterans and their families access the critical services and support they need –
ranging from social, mental and physical health services to housing and employment assistance
- The Iowa Green Veterans AmeriCorps (IGVA) program,
based in the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will connect military veterans with meaningful employment opportunities in green jobs and the natural
resources field through duties like assisting rural, low-income, and elderly residents identify and implement energy improvements, engage in disaster recovery
efforts, and stewardship activities in Iowa state parks
- The Virginia Wounded Warrior Program of the Virginia Department of Veterans
Services has formed a Veterans Corps program that will operate initially in the Tidewater region of Virginia, home to one of the largest concentrations of
veterans in the United States. AmeriCorps members will assist other veterans and their families in navigating the resources and services that are available,
but in many cases not known or out of reach for veterans and their families
- AmeriCorps and the St. Bernard Project in New Orleans recently launched
Veterans Corps, which engages veterans in recovery construction work still going on six years later after Hurricane Katrina. The program also connects local
veterans to one another for a support system to ease the transition back to civilian life
