Texas College Credit for Heroes Program Searching for Takers
Seven (7) Texas colleges are offering a unique program where your Military Training and Expertise may be transferred into College Credits.
The colleges will provide models for awarding college credit by evaluating military training, including testing and prior learning assessments which other Texas
colleges may replicate. There will be a focus on allied health careers, and the initiative will partner with the Military Education Training Center (METC) in San
Antonio to provide current active duty service members with an accelerated degree plan.

BackWASHINGTON — Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced last week a new partnership with Microsoft Corp. to provide veterans with vouchers for no-cost training and certifications that can lead to important industry-recognized credentials. The voucher program will serve veterans in five communities with the highest number of returning post-9/11 era veterans: Seattle, Wash.; San Diego, Calif., Houston, Texas; Northern Virginia; and Jacksonville, Fla.
"In today's competitive, high-tech economy, specialized training is often a prerequisite for employment," said Secretary Hilda L. Solis. "The program will help our returning heroes gain access to the training and certifications they need to land good jobs in growing industries."
Each area will receive 1,000 vouchers per year for two years, totaling 10,000 vouchers. Microsoft will provide in-person support to ensure that the recipients succeed in the training and certifications. Additionally, the local workforce systems will help connect the veterans and their spouses with potential employers in their areas.
"Veterans have served our country bravely, have superb military training, and have developed valuable leadership, management and diplomatic skills," said Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel and executive vice president. "We hope that by providing additional access to training and other employment resources, we will help close the opportunity divide for more of our servicemen and women, as well as their spouses, who have also made great sacrifices."

BackIn support of the White House 'Joining Forces' initiative, Intel Corporation announced a partnership to launch the Intel Veteran's Employment Training program, or Intel VET, a new program designed to provide veterans with training and mentoring services as they transition from a military career to employment in the private sector.
Intel VET provides support to veterans by offering services such as behavioral interview training, mock interviews, mentor matching, one-on-one coaching and computer skills training. Resume decoding and translation training will also be provided, helping veterans translate military occupation specialties and career experience into key corporate language.
Intel is leveraging its existing Intel Computer Clubhouse Network (ICCN) to provide technology training and coaching for veterans and their partners looking for employment. ICCN is a community-based after-school technology learning program that allows youth to use professional hardware and software to create computer-based projects. The ICCN resources will be expanded to open up computer and technology training to veterans.

While employers agree military personnel bring relevant skills to civilian jobs, what employers' rate as valued differs from veteran perceptions. These are the skills veterans ranked in order, as important and in parenthesis how employers surveyed view those same skills:

Additionally, the top two undervalued skills employers' desire, don't even show up in the veterans' assessment; Concentrate for long periods and Creativity. One thing to keep in mind when looking at this list is it is data from all types of employers. But, it also isn't black and white information from all types of employers.
The best advice would be to research the employer and or type of employment and what skills are best desired, and then use the best examples of your skills in those desirable areas.
