Online And Federal Resume Formats

Barbara Adams, CPRW, CEIP, CMRC, CFRW
www.militaryresumewriters.com and www.careerproplus.com

Gone are the days when a resume was simply a resume. No longer is your decision merely to choose between a chronological and functional resume. If you have been in the market for a job recently you may have noticed a surge in the various types of resume formats out there, especially if you have perused federal job sites. With recent advances in technology and the Internet, employers have altered resume submission processes to include accepting resumes online.

Most corporations now use online resume systems to screen potential job candidates. Monster, Career Builder, and other large job boards have distinct posting requirements. Many military recruiters have specific job boards where you can post your resume online. Each online application format has different requirements for resume length, number of jobs allowed to be described and number of characters allowed. In addition, although not described in depth here, many of the formats have differences in how dates are reported for employment - some require the actual date of the month you started work, not only the month and year.

Writing or applying for Federal jobs can be quite a daunting process. With more than 1.8 million federal employees, and over 250 agencies, one would think there would be a standardized format. On the contrary, each agency has its own on-line system unique to the agency.

Some of the most common online formats include:

ARMY RESUMIX
The Army Resumix format allows 12,000 characters to describe your work experience, with no limit on the number of positions you can list. In addition, for this format there are additional fields for your education, training, licenses, certifications, skills, awards and other information. You must include answers to all KSAs in the resume in this format. You can only have one Army Resumix on file for all applications you make for Army positions. This can be limiting, depending on your background and achievements. This format is used for most, but not all Army postings.

NAVY RESUMIX
The Navy Resumix format allows up to six positions to describe your work experience, with up to 7,500 characters per position. In addition, for this format there are additional fields for your education, training, licenses, certifications, skills, awards and other information. You must include answers to all KSAs in the resume in this format. The maximum length for the entire resume is five pages. You can only have one Navy Resumix on file for ALL applications you make for Navy positions. This can be limiting, depending on your background and achievements. This format is used for most, but not all Navy postings.

AIR FORCE RESUMIX
The Air Force Resumix format allows up to six positions to describe your work experience, with ONLY up to 1,500 characters per position. In addition, for this format there are additional fields for your education, training, licenses, certifications, skills, awards and other information. In general, you must include answers to all KSAs in the resume in this format. You can only have one Air Force Resumix on file for ALL applications you make for Air Force positions. This format, due to the short length allowed for job descriptions, is very limiting. The Air Force RESUMIX is not used for all Air Force positions. Many Air Force positions use a paper-based regular Federal Resume along with separate KSAs for the application process.

MILITARY JOB BOARDS and other On-line Resume Builders
Other agencies have online Resumix builders; each one places different restrictions on characters allowed per position, and specifies differences in the formatting of information. Read each job board posting carefully to determine specific character counts and information required. Carefully select specific career categories, your best skill sets, and the location that best suits your experience and relocation preferences. This information is used to select and determine specific candidates for certain jobs, levels of experience, and location preference.

QUICKHIRE
The QuickHire format is used by many agencies (the list has been growing) for online applications. This format is limited to 16,000 characters total for the entire resume to describe your contact information, employment background, education, training, licenses, certifications, skills, awards and other information.

In order to find the KSAs (essays) for an announcement in QuickHire, generally, you must first register on the QuickHire website for the agency you are interested in applying for, enter your contact information and load a preliminary resume (you can update the resume when you actually apply for the job). At that point, you can then log into the QuickHire site, view the vacancy announcement and scroll to the bottom of the announcement. By clicking ‘view vacancy questions’, you can find both the multiple choice questions you will need to answer and the essay (KSA) questions which will need to be answered. The KSA answers will be limited in length - usually 4000 characters each.

USAJOBS
USAJobs also has an online resume format. Even though you can post most of the information you have on a regular paper Federal Resume - it is not formatted as nicely, so we recommend using this format only if it is not optional. Since this format has been endorsed by the Office of Professional Management (OPM), it has become more popular with a variety of agencies.

If an announcement requires a USAJobs resume, it also requires you to answer both multiple choice questions and possibly essay (KSA) questions. Unfortunately, you may not see the questions until after you start the application process. You will need to register on the system, upload and submit a resume - and then you must read and answer the application essay questions. Generally, there is no limit on the length of the KSA answers in this format.

Remember, it is extremely important to follow each specific step for online resume posting. Professional Resume Writers can assist you in this process if you do not want to go it alone. Do not let this one important factor of not properly posting your resume, eliminate you from interviewing for your dream job.

President Recognizes Month of the Military Child

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 13, 2009 – President Barack Obama today issued a statement recognizing April as the Month of the Military Child. His statement follows:

"In 1986, April was designated as the Month of the Military Child, and I am proud to mark the special recognition the Department of Defense has given to military children.

"Like all Americans, I am grateful to the brave men and women in uniform who are serving our nation. They are the living embodiment of the ideals of sacrifice, honor and duty that have always made this nation great – and their sacrifice is their families' sacrifice too.

"Their children, especially, display tremendous strength and courage each day, bravely bearing the burden of having a loved one serving in harm's way. They may move many times – across the nation and even around the world – as they grow up. They may not see their loved ones for months on end.

"It is not easy, and Michelle and I, as well as the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden, admire and are deeply grateful to each and every one of them. I call on all Americans to keep military children in their thoughts and prayers and to do their part to reach out to and support them and their families."

Wounded Warrior Receives Standing Ovation at CMAs

By Pfc. Alisa J. Feliciano/Headquarters Marine Corps

ARLINGTON, Va., April 14, 2009 - Wounded Warrior and Marine veteran 1st Lt. Andrew Kinard received a standing ovation April 5 during "country music's biggest night" at the 2009 Country Music Awards.

Kinard took the stage at the CMAs to introduce performer Trace Adkins, who sang "Til the Last Shot's Fired" with the West Point Glee Club. But before Kinard could introduce the country star, audience members rose to their feet and gave him a standing ovation.

Kinard, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., who was wounded in Iraq and lost both of his legs, said he was humbled by the experience.

Prior to his live CMA performance, Adkins said it was a privilege to perform in support of the Wounded Warrior Project with such a distinguished choir and for the men and women in uniform.

Adkins' song, "Til the Last Shot's Fired," also appears on his newest album and profits from digital downloads of the song on iTunes will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The project is a nonprofit organization for U.S. service members with the mission to honor and empower wounded warriors through events, aid and awareness.

With his CMA performance now behind him, Kinard said he wants everyone to remember, "It's not about the war, it's about the warrior."

Since retiring from the Marine Corps, Kinard has been accepted into Harvard Law School and will start classes this fall.

VA Continues Notification Process for Veterans Affected by Reprocessing Issues

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced 3,174 Veterans have already been notified of the results of testing they underwent recently, that testing was conducted because of improperly reprocessed endoscopy equipment that may have been used in their care. These Veterans, in the Tennessee, Georgia and South Florida areas were among 10,555 Veterans sent letters offering free testing.

VA patients, who believe that they may have been exposed to cross contamination, were patients that received endoscopic procedures at the VA's Murfreesboro, Tenn., facility from April 2003 to December 2008 and the VA's Augusta, Ga., hospital from January 2008 to November 2008 and the VA's Miami hospital from May 2004 to March 2009.

As of April 1, 2009, 17 Veterans have tested positive for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or the Human Immunodeficiency (HIV) Virus. Five Veterans tested positive for Hepatitis B virus; eleven for Hepatitis C; and one for HIV. Of the positive test results, eleven were tested at VA's Murfreesboro, TN facility, and six were tested at VA's Augusta, Ga., hospital. These results do not indicate that there is any relationship between these patients' conditions and the endoscopy procedures they underwent. However, VA is conducting an epidemiologic investigation to look into the possibility of such a relationship.

While reviews indicate that the transmission of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C virus as a result of endoscopy procedures is extremely small and that transmission of HIV through endoscopy has never been reported, VA will appropriately counsel and care for these patients, no matter what the source of their infections may be.

"Secretary Shinseki has demanded that all Veterans enrolled with VA get the best health care available anywhere," said Michael J. Kussman, MD, MS, MACP, VA's Under Secretary for Health. "We have an obligation to provide those who have served and sacrificed for our Nation the care they deserve."

VA is continuing the process of testing and counseling Veterans who may be affected by this issue. The Department has added additional personnel at its Murfreesboro, Augusta and Miami hospitals to ensure that affected Veterans receive prompt testing and appropriate counseling. It is attempting to locate individuals whose letters have been returned as undeliverable, and to reach out to homeless Veterans with no known address. Affected Veterans are notified about their test results as soon as their results are verified.

"The VA prides itself on being accountable and we are extremely concerned about this matter and as a result we have initiated an investigation," said Kussman. "Additionally, we are making sure to take corrective measures to ensure Veterans have the information and the care necessary to deal with this unacceptable development."

VA is committed to reducing and preventing inadvertent harm to our patients as a result of their care. The Department is a leader in the health care industry in developing and nurturing a culture of safety at all its facilities. Patient safety managers at all 153 VA hospitals lead VA's 280,000 employees in efforts to reduce and eliminate harm.

VA patients and their families may call 1-877-575-7256, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for additional information.
